Our Story

We’re 3 moms of kids with dyslexia. When our children were diagnosed we had so many questions and we weren’t sure who to ask or where to start. We desperately wanted to help our children - but we didn’t know how. We felt alone and overwhelmed.

We started this podcast, because we don’t want anyone else on this journey to feel alone.  Sometimes the most powerful words you can hear are “me too”.  And that’s why we’re here. Because sharing our stories lets others know where we’ve been. We’ve walked this road and we know there’s success and hope on the other side.

We’re here because our fight isn’t just for our children, it’s also to empower your journey. Our hope and goal is that we answer some questions, that we bring you helpful resources, but most importantly that you can take a deep breath and find community here.  Join us in the Dyslexia Den.

Meet Our Hosts

Ashley B

Ashley B

Ashley B

Ashley B is a wedding and event planner by trade and has been navigating the dyslexia journey since 2018. She lives in Birmingham, Alabama with her husband, Jon, and their two teenage sons — Noah (15) and Hart (13) — who were both diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia during the same school year in 1st and 3rd grades.

Noah attended Spring Valley School in Birmingham for five years, where he received explicit dyslexia instruction and completed the Neuhaus program. He is now thriving back in public school as a 10th grader. Hart is in 8th grade and excited to follow his brother into high school. The family also has a golden lab mix named Lexi — lovingly named after their dyslexia journey.

Ashley’s passion for launching The Dyslexia Den comes from a deep desire to bring hope to parents and children walking this road — whether newly diagnosed or years in. She never wants another parent to feel isolated the way she once did, and her prayer is to pass forward the hope and community that carried her family through.

Ashley G is married to James and they have two children, Edie (14) and Whit (11). Their family also has two dogs, Mae and Murphee. Her family loves being in the outdoors, kayaking and spending time with friends. She is an entreprenuer and owns a school portrait company, Pixels Photography.

Ashley’s daughter, Edie, was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyscalculia after the first grade. The beginning of their journey felt very alone with a lot of questions but so much uncertainty of where to find clear answers. She became passionate about being an advocate and bringing awareness to the cause. Ashley G believes the journey should be easier for parents to navigate and every child should receive the intervention they need to achieve their full potential.

Edie is now a freshman in high school and very proud of being a hard worker. While Dyslexia and Dyscalculia will always present challenges she’s confident in her strategies and the success she’s experiencing and hopes to encourage other students.

Lauren

Lauren Gwaltney lives in Birmingham Alabama with her husband, Andy, and their two daughters Lilly (15) and Addy (11). She is a practicing architect with an expertise in higher education facilities.

Her youngest daughter Addy was diagnosed in 2021 with dyslexia, ADHD, and Tourette’s syndrome which a started the family’s learning differences (aka “superpower”) journey.

Lauren’s hope for the Dyslexia Den is for parents, friends, and family, to never feel alone in their journey with dyslexia or other learning differences.
